With the backing of the RCCC and CCT the opening session saw Swiss Sven Michel pipping the young Robin Brydone in their last end, with a final stone that was not quite thin enough, broadcast live on TV in homes around the UK and streamed worldwide on the internet.
Convincing victories came for Team Edin against Graham Shaw (9-0); Japp van Dorp against Felix Attinger (9-1); Thomas Ulsrud against Canada’s Ian Parker (9-4)and Eskilsson against Baltic neighbours Team Kauste (9-2) getting the Mercure City of Perth Masters off to an exciting start.
Canada’s Heidt won over Team Russia (5-4) and but Brewster was less successful going down 4-7 to Tomi Rantamaki while fellow Scot, Stuart Taylor made a determined start to his bid for a first Masters title – winning 5-3 against Germany’s Alexander Baumann.
